MEDICAL DEVICE CASE STUDY

Scope

A long standing medical device client of The Language Center advised us of a product launch on the horizon for a new medical device implant requiring a new IFU to be distributed worldwide to surgeons, doctors, and healthcare professionals. As with most new product launches, deadlines are very tight and competitive. We gladly accepted the task and went right to work.

Process

For this client, IFU’s are translated into 16 languages with an approximate 15 day turnaround requirement from start to finish. The project manager efficiently set up the 16 translation & edit teams to begin the work which would result in 58,000+ translated words for each language. Translation memory we’ve accumulated for this client by language assisted the teams with a consistent and smooth translation and editing process taking advantage of all previously translated and approved text. Once the translations were completed we moved the files as completed to desktop publishing for layout into an approved template. Following DTP, the inserts by language were reviewed by a separate linguist proof team to make any final linguistic adjustments to the file. All team members are professional linguists experienced in the subject matter as well as the tasks of either translating, editing, proofing, and desktop publishing.

Although native language subtitles are typically verbatim, translated subtitles are often paraphrased to provide the essential meaning of the dialog within the time constraints of the on-screen video, maintaining a comfortable reading rate for the viewer.

Results

The Language Center wrapped up the project and delivered a final PDF of the IFU to the client 2 days ahead of schedule for client review or any last minute changes. The client review was completed and they were completely satisfied with the final IFU in 16 languages. The Language Center has worked on many projects for this client since 1995 and they have been very satisfied with the results, not just the on time delivery of the work, but also the effectiveness, professionalism and customer service that comes along with each project that is completed.

The Global Labeling and Packaging Department has referred The Language Center to numerous other departments within the company and we have provided translations, transcriptions, DTP and other services to their other departments and locations, all with excellence in customer service.
